This photograph was taken during a Panga cruise around the Champion Island area on Friday morning, December 5, 2008. We were in the Panga shooting up at the shoreline. Prickly Pear Cactus is the most common cacti in the Galapagos. It has yellow flowers and grows like a shrub, except on islands where threatened by herbivores. On these islands, adaptations (survival of the fittest) have caused the trunks of the Prickly Pear Cactus to grow over 5 feet tall. It was a warm morning with temperatures in the upper 70's and partly cloudy skies.
