This photograph of a Sally Lightfoot Crab was taken while were were hiking at Puerto Egas on Santiago Island late in the afternoon on December 1, 2008. This crab, Grapsus grapsus, or "Sally Lightfoot" is one of the most common crabs along the western coast of South America and the Galápagos. Young G. grapsus are black or dark brown in color and camouflage well on the black lava coasts of volcanic islands. Adults are variable in color with some being a muted brownish-red, some mottled or spotted brown, pink, or yellow. Sally Lightfoot crabs are thought to have been named for a sultry nightclub dancer from Guayaquil, whose alluring performances in her red and yellow dress, captivated 19th century sailors. Humans do not consider this species to be a tastey morsel, hence, it is used mainly as bait. Temperatures were in the low 70's with cloudy skies.
