This photograph was taken as we approached Fernandina Island on the afternoon of December 3, 2008. A pod of approximately 300 Short-beaked Dolphins began swimming and frolicking en masse near our ship. We enjoyed watching the dolphins vault out of the water in twisting spins and dives, splashing down into the water to reemerge minutes later in more showy bursts. Temperatures were in the low 70's with cloudy skies.
