This photograph was taken at a pond near the tortoise preserve in the highlands of the national park located on Santa Cruz Island. The White-cheeked or Galapagos Pintail found here is an endemic subspecies, galapagensis. It nests in waterside vegetation near the ground. It was a partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the 80's. In the highland area we did experience some light rain, known locally as the "garua".
