This photograph of a Yellow-crowned Night-heron was taken during a hike at Puerto Egas on the western end of Santiago Island. This endemic subspecies, pauper, is found in coastal areas. It nests close to the gound amongst mangrove roots or rocks and sometimes even in caves. It was a partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's.
