After an early breakfast at the Hacienda San Lucas on February 21, 2011, we drove up the La Laguna-San Francisco Road to experience and bird an area that provides an excellent elevational transect beginning in dry scrub, ascending through pine-oak woodlands, and ending in humid, broad-leaf forest. We were in the humid, broad-leaf forest when we began to see Bushy-crested Jays. A flock of approximately twenty of these range-restricted birds were not very cooperative in sitting still and seemed to be constantly moving. Brad took this photograph of one perched (momentarily) in the valley below us. It was a beautiful, partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the 80's.
