After an early breakfast at the Hacienda San Lucas on February 21, 2011, we drove up the La Laguna-San Francisco Road to experience and bird an area that provides an excellent elevational transect beginning in dry scrub, ascending through pine-oak woodlands, and ending in humid, broad-leaf forest. We were in the humid, broad-leaf forest when we began to see Bushy-crested Jays. A flock of approximately twenty of these range-restricted birds were not very cooperative in sitting still and seemed to be constantly moving. Brad took this photograph of one perched (momentarily) in the valley below us. This species is endemic to northern Central America. It was a beautiful, partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the 80's.
