After an early breakfast at the Hacienda San Lucas on March 21, 2011, we drove up the La Laguna-San Francisco Road to experience and bird an area that provides an excellent elevational transect beginning in dry scrub, ascending through pine-oak woodlands, and ending in humid, broad-leaf forest. We were driving down the mountain to the dry scrub area to head back to the Hacienda for lunch when we stopped to view a group of swifts that were flying at near eye level. A mixed species flock of Black and Chestnut-collared Swifts provided lots of excitement among our group. What a treat to see them so close! Brad was able to get a photo of one of the Chestnut-collared Swifts as it zoomed by us. Its chestnut collar is distinctive of the species. It was a beautiful, partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the upper 80's and high humidity.
