We had a very early breakfast (0400) at Pico Bonito Lodge on February 26, 2011, before driving to the Aguan Valley to look for the Honduran Emerald at the Honduran Emerald Reserve near Olanchito. We arrived at the Reserve around mid-morning. It was a very hot, humid, sunny morning with temperatures in the low 100's. The Honduran Emerald is the only bird species endemic to Honduras and is found in the tropical dry thorn-forested areas of the country. The Honduran Emerald has a glittering turquoise throat and chest, a pale grey belly and a cleft bronzy-tail with a dark subterminal band.
