After an early breakfast at the Hacienda San Lucas on February 21, 2011, we drove up the La Laguna-San Francisco Road to experience and bird an area that provides an excellent elevational transect beginning in dry scrub, ascending through pine-oak woodlands, and ending in humid, broad-leaf forest. It was a foggy morning with temperatures in the low 70's. We first saw the Roadside Hawk perched in a tree. When it suddenly took off in flight, Brad was able to capture it in this photograph. Note the bird's evenly broad tail bands and rufous panel in the primaries. This is one of my favorite photos taken during our trip.
