The Akureyri Botanical Gardens function as a public park with decorative plants (since 1912) and as a botanical garden (since 1957) with a noteworthy collection of specimens from the Icelandic flora along with imported flowers, trees and shrubs. This botanical garden has the distinction of being the furthest north and was established by the women of Akureyri who continue to care for the area. Luckily for us, the botanical garden was adjacent to our hotel, the Edda, and we enjoyed morning and evening walks in this lovely park during our stay in Akureyri.
