After leaving Höfði Nature Park, we stopped at a local farm to look at a 150 year old barn and storage shed that still had the original door and hinges. This is a photograph of the other side of the barn. A sod or turf roof is a traditional Scandinavian type of roof. Sod is placed on top of several layers of birch bark on gently sloping wooden roof boards. The grassy appearance of the roof is known in Icelandic as 'torfþak'. The farmer we talked to said that he does yearly maintenance on the roof, while replacing it would be too costly. A small tourist business helps him defray the maintenance costs. Sod roofs have enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity on vacation homes and lodges in Scandinavia.
