During the afternoon of August 10, 2010, we stopped at Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or "castles"). This area, not far from Akureyri, is located east of Mývatn in northern Iceland. It consists of a large area of unusually shaped lava fields composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. This sign describes the geologic processes that formed the area.
