During the afternoon of August 10, 2010, we stopped at Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or "castles"). This area, not far from Akureyri, is located east of Mývatn in northern Iceland. It consists of a large area of unusually shaped lava fields composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions. In Nordic Christian lore, it is said that Dimmuborgir is the place where Satan landed when he was cast from the heavens and created the apparent "Helvetets katakomber" which is Swedish for "The Catacombs of Hell". Dimmuborgir is home to the Icelandic Yule Lads, trolls that are active around Christmas. Trolls are a big part of Icelandic lore and the tourist business.
