During the afternoon of August 10, 2010, we stopped at Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or "castles"). This area, not far from Akureyri, is located east of Mývatn in northern Iceland. It consists of a large area of unusually shaped lava fields composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. The crack rising skyward along this lava structure made us wonder whether the cause was weathering or, perhaps, ground movement.
