During the afternoon of August 10, 2010, we stopped at Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or "castles"). This area, not far from Akureyri, is located east of Mývatn in northern Iceland. It consists of a large area of unusually shaped lava fields composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions. Dimmuborgir is home to the Icelandic Yule Lads, trolls that are active around Christmas. Trolls are a big part of Icelandic lore and the tourist business. We visualized an Icelandic hero sitting atop his steed when we took this photo . . . maybe we were just tired!
