During the afternoon of August 10, 2010, we stopped at Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities" or "castles"). This area, not far from Akureyri, is located east of Mývatn in northern Iceland. The area is characterized by dramatic vertical lava pillars and large hollow cell- or chamber-like structures formed around bubbles of vapor. Several of the chambers and pillar bases are large enough to house humans, giving rise to the term "castles" (borgir).
