Thursday, August 12, 2010, turned out to be a rainy day in the Reykjavik area with temperatures around 12° C. We headed to Hveragerđi, a small town in the southern part of Iceland. It is located 45 km east of Reykjavík on Iceland's main ring road, Route 1. The river Varmá runs through the town. The surrounding area is part of the Hengill central volcano and is geothermally active with frequent (usually minor) earthquakes. The town is known for its greenhouses, which are heated by hot water from volcanic hot springs. This is a photograph of some of the scenery that we saw in the area.
