During the morning of Thursday, August 12, 2010, we drove to the east of Reykjavík along Iceland's main ring road, Route 1. The first natural wonder on the Golden Circle tour in Iceland is the volcanic crater, Kerid (Kerið). Even in the rain and 12° C. temperatures, this crater was spectacular. Kerið, an inactive volcanic slag crater, was formed about 6,500 years ago. It has an oval shape and is about 300 yards long and 185 yards wide. The volcano's pit is over 60 yards deep. A pool of emerald colored water collects in the bottom. The pool is between 7 and 10 meters/yards deep depending on the water level of the surrounding area.
