The Námafjall Hverfjall area east of Mývatn in northern Iceland was our last scheduled stop during the afternoon of Tuesday, August 10, 2010. This active geothermal area is noted for its fumaroles and mud pots. This photograph shows several steam vents and some of the topography in the area. Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Rift with the North American Tectonic Plate on the west side of the rift and the Eurasian Tectonic Plate on the east side. The plates are moving apart at a speed of two millimeters per year. Because the Earth's crust is stressed, volcanic activity is always a possibility.
