The Námafjall Hverfjall area east of Mývatn in northern Iceland was our last scheduled stop during the afternoon of Tuesday, August 10, 2010. This active geothermal area is noted for its fumaroles and mud pots. Hverir is a geothermal area on the east slope of the Námafjall, a low mountain ridge a few kilometers south of Krafla (south of the Ring Road). Numerous steam vents are found among the hot and smelly (sulfurous compounds) attractions as shown in this photograph of a plugged borehole (drilled to access geothermal power in the form of hot water and steam).
