This is a photograph that we took from our bus of Hofdi House in Reykjavik. This was the site of the October 11, 1986, meeting between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to discuss nuclear disarmament. This summit to abolish nuclear weapons was unsuccessful because the agreement would have required "an exceptional level of trust" that neither the US or the USSR had yet developed. The meeting did, however, lead to negotiations that resulted in the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the START I Treaty.
