During the afternoon of Tuesday, August 10, 2010, we hiked to the top of a pseudocrater and took this photograph of the topography surrounding Lake Mývatn. The shores along the south side of the lake are home to many pseudocraters that were formed during volcanic eruptions. Lava flowed over the wetlands and eventually resulted in steam eruptions that formed medium-sized craters. There are a series of trails in the town of Skútustaðir that lead through the cratered area. Signs provide information about the geology behind the formations. The name "Mývatn" is derived from the vast numbers of midges that gather at the lake and cover and annoy the tourist! It was sunny with temperatures around 20° C.
