We woke on May 8, 2009, to warm weather and partly cloudy skies. After breakfast, we took a walk from our hotel, La Choca, through the village of Lecina and headed north towards the village of Betorz. Along the way, we saw almond groves and took this photograph of ripening fruit. Although popularly referred to as a nut, the edible part of the almond is botanically not a true nut, but the seed of a drupe (a botanic name for a type of fruit). "Shelling" almonds refers to removing the shell (the endocarp of the fruit) to reveal the seed. Temperatures were in the low to high 70's on this clear, sunny morning.
