On the morning of May 7, 2009, we visited the monastery of San Juan de la Peña (Saint John of the Rock) which is located southwest of Jaca, Huesca, Spain. San Juan de la Peña was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon during the Middle Ages. While waiting for the lower level Romanesque monastery to open, we hiked around the area near the upper level Baroque monastery. The Coal Tit was busy gathering nesting material. This small bird with a big head has an oval white nape patch. It may also raise a small crest (tiny spike) on its hindcrown when agitated. Temperatures were in the high 60's on this partly cloudy morning.
