On May 5, 2009, we gathered outside our hotel, the Hotel Castillo de Acher, in Siresa, to head to the Boca del Infierno to look for Wallcreepers, when our "leader" spotted this species. The Wryneck is grouped with woodpeckers and is about as big as a small shrike. It has a short, pointed bill with a barred breast. Sexes are alike in plumage. When the Wryneck climbs, it does not use its tail for support. It chisels rather than digs with its bill. It was a partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the 50's.
