On May 1, 2009, we visited various habitats throughout the Ebro Delta (Parc Natural del Delta de l'Ebre). Early in the day we encountered wet, cold and windy conditions with temperatures in the low 60's. But, as the day progressed, the weather cleared, and temperatures rose to the low 80's. This photograph of a Greater Flamingo was taken near the ocean side platform at La Gola de Migjorn. The Greater Flamingo frequents muddy beaches, salt lakes, or sea bays and is sensitive to disturbance. Its legs are entirely pink (lacking the blazing red knees of the Chilean Flamingo). Its plumage is more white than pink (our American race has bright pink-red plumage).
