On the afternoon of May 8, 2009, some members of our group decided to visit Alquezar, a hilltop village in the province of Huesca, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees. While we were waiting for the Santa Marķa la Mayor collegiate church to open for tours, we watched the birds flying in the river valley below. The Griffon Vulture was one of them. This vulture is a huge bird, bigger than most large eagles. The adult has a yellowish bill along with a white head and neck and long fingers (see photo). It was a beautiful day with clear skies and temperatures in the 80's.
