On the afternoon of May 9, 2009, we were birding south of Huesca (Aragon, Spain). We watched a male Penduline Tit busily constructing his nest. This was the second Penduline Tit nest that we'd seen...each was burried within the tree leaves and very difficult to observe. The nests were pale and downy-looking (being made of interwoven seed-hairs of willow, aspen and bulrush). This species builds its nest in birch, willow or alder trees. The nest is typically built at the end of a thin hanging branch and is pouch-shaped with a side entrance tunnel. This photograph (unfortunately without the Tit being present) provides a clear look at the nest. It was a clear, sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 70's.
