On the afternoon of May 9, 2009, we were birding south of Huesca (Aragon, Spain) when we saw this Purple Heron perched in the trees near a swampy area. This species has a bayonet-like bill (long and narrow), a narrow head and neck (with thin black border), and a striped face. It was a clear, sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 70's.
