On the morning of May 7, 2009, we visited the monastery of San Juan de la Peña (Saint John of the Rock) which is located southwest of Jaca, Huesca, Spain. San Juan de la Peña was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon during the Middle Ages. While waiting for the lower level Romanesque monastery to open, we hiked around the area near the upper level Baroque monastery. This adult female Red (Common) Crossbill was feeding in a fir tree near the upper level monastery. The bill of this species of crossbill is longer than it is deep, and the culmen is moderately curved. This juvenile is a dull yellowish-green color with grey-brown wings that are boldly streaked. Temperatures were in the high 60's on this partly cloudy morning.
