We spent the night of April 29, 2009, in the heart of Don Quixote country at an isolated farm or finca amidst a lovely vineyard. The hotel, Hotel Rural Entrevinas, was recently renovated. Before breakfast on April 30, we birded the grounds surrounding our hotel. We saw these two Rock Sparrows sitting on the roof of a dove cote. This species is a big, stocky sparrow with a hefty bill. The broad supercillium is pale and lies between a dark crown-side and a dark eye-stripe. Sexes are similar. Temperatures were in the 40's with sunny skies during our pre-breakfast hike.
