We'd spent the night at the Hotel Castillo de Acher in Siresa, Huesca, Spain, and left for a pre-breakfast birding trip to look for the Wallcreeper. We birded a canyon area known as the mouth of the devil or la Boca del Infierno. Our time in the Boca proved to be quite an adventure. It was windy and cold with temperatures in the high 40's to low 50's. Luckily, Brad and I had bought gloves, heavy sweaters and hats to replace our cold weather clothing that was stolen in Valencia. We spent time before and after breakfast (brr!) at the Boca, then birded Selva De Osa, came back to the Boca before lunch, birded nearby Garbardito (another Wallcreeper site) after lunch, then headed back to the Boca for one last look before dinner. Finally, in the late afternoon sunlight, we spotted at least two Wallcreepers. This species likes steep rock faces and easily blends in with the colors of rock in this area. Because of this, finding this species is a challange (as evidenced by the hours we spent looking for it). The sun shining on one face of the rock late in the afternoon provided the backdrop to locating this bird.
