After breakfast on July 27, 2010, our group (twelve participants and three leaders) boarded a bus and headed out of Bergen toward Voss. Before lunch, we birded around Voss' ski area. As the Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly, Aglais urticae, spread its wings and alit on some nearby flowers, Brad took its photograph. The Norwegian name for the Small Tortoiseshell is Neslesommerfugl or Nettle Butterfly. This species is aptly named because it deposits its eggs on nettle leaves, and the resulting larval stage then feeds on these leaves. It was a partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the low to mid-60's.
