We birded in the Hardangervidda area the entire day of July 29, 2010. The Hardangervidda is a mountain plateau, the largest peneplain (eroded plain) in Europe, and is located in the Hardanger region of western Norway. With a cold year-round alpine climate, it is the site of Norway's second largest glacier, the Hardangerjøkulen Glacier. This glacier reaches a height of 6,112 feet. Much of the plateau is protected as part of Hardangervidda National Park. The plateau covers an area of about 2,500 square miles and has an average elevation of 3,500 feet. The highest point on the plateau is the Sandfloeggi, which reaches a height of 5,646 feet. This photograph shows some of the cairns that people erected in the area. It was a partly cloudy to cloudy morning with intermittent rain and temperatures in the mid-40's.
