This photograph shows the Hardangervidda's tundra. In the distance one can see the road that we travelled on through the National Park, the standard red building (probably a hiker or shepherd's hut), and one of the many pools that dot the vidda. The varying climate of the Hardangervidda plateau has a marked effect on the flora, which is richer on the wetter west side than in the drier east. The plateau is covered by coarse grasses, mosses (especially sphagnum) and lichens. The west side is dominated by rocky terrain and expanses of bare rock, while the east side, is flatter and more heavily vegetated. Temperatures were in the low 50's on this partly cloudy to cloudy morning with intermittent rain.
