After breakfast on July 30, 2010, we drove toward Kjeåsen in the Eidfjord municipality in Hardanger, Norway to do some birding along the river. This is a photograph of a male White-backed Woodpecker with its unmarked white back, red crown, reddish vent area, and streaked, pale buffish-pink colored flanks. This is a rare bird in Norway with only 500 breeding pairs (10 breeding pairs in Finland). The morning was very foggy with temperatures in the low 70's. The fog and overcast conditions made seeing and photographing birds very difficult.
