White-backed Woodpecker

We saw the White-backed Woodpecker while birding in the Eidfjord municipality in Hardanger, Norway. With only 500 breeding pairs in Norway, we were pleased to be able to see this species. The bird's white back and rump are clearly visible during flight. It is slightly bigger than the Great Spotted Woodpecker, and the black cheek band does not join into the crown leaving a white gap. This gap is closed on adult Great Spotted Woodpeckers and joins into a red patch at the back of the neck.
