Late in the afternoon on December 24, 2009, we boarded our bus and headed from El Valle's Canopy Lodge across a narrow valley to bird at Cariguana. Birding along a local road provided us looks at several interesting species. The male Barred Antshrike was one of the species that we were able to get photographs of. The broad black and white barring, yellow or white iris, and black crown are good field marks to use to identify the male of this species. It was a cloudy afternoon with intermittent rain, temperatures in the low 80's, and high humidity.
