After breakfast on December 28, 2009, we birded Semaphore Hill, the one mile road connecting Canopy Tower with the main highway. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this partly sunny, humid morning. This is a side-view of a Broad-billed Motmot that Brad took as the bird perched in a tree. The photograph shows the bird's bluish-green racket-tipped tail. The bird's two long, central tail feathers are completely vaned when they first grow out but become racket-tipped as the loosely attached barbs above the terminal disk are lost. This results in a length of narrow shaft devoid of feathers.
