El Valle is located within the crater (600 m above sea level) of the second largest inhabited dormant volcano in the world. From our lodge in El Valle, we traveled to bird the area around Cerro Gaital, a 1,000 m high mountain. We spent the morning of December 26, 2009, birding in this area. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with cloudy skies and intermittent rain. This photograph shows a Chestnut-backed Antbird. This is the nominate form of the species and has blue orbital skin, no white spots on the wing-coverts as in (cassini), a blackish head, and a chestnut-brown body.
