During the morning of December 30, 2009, we birded along Pipeline Road. This road is just beyond the old Canal Zone town of Gamboa and winds for miles through the forests and foothills of Soberania National Park. It was a sunny morning with temperatures in the upper 70's. We saw a second Crimson-crested Woodpecker working its way up another branch. This bird is a male and can be identified by the white spot at the base of the bill and a small black and white spot on the ear-coverts. This photograph shows the characteristic white "V" on the lower back.
