We were at Canopy Tower on December 28, 2009. We walked down and birded along Semaphore Hill. This male Mantled Howler Monkey was sitting in a tree. The Mantled Howler, Alouatta palliata or Golden-mantled Howling Monkey, is a type of New World monkey that can be found in Central and South America. It is one of the monkey species most often seen and heard in the wild in Central America. It gets its "mantled" name from the long guard hairs on its sides. This male's chest had evidence of Botflies, members of the Oestroidea family. The bumps which look like small volcanoes are visible on this male's chest. An enlarged hyoid bone, a hollow bone near the vocal chords, amplifies a male's calls (a morning wake up call you won't soon forget!).
