This is a photograph of some bracket or shelf fungi that I saw while hiking in Parque Nacional Soberania during the early afternoon of January 1, 2010. There are many groups of fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota. Characteristically, they produce shelf- or bracket-shaped fruiting bodies called conks that lie in a close planar grouping of separate or interconnected horizontal rows. The back with whitish fringe is a species that I haven't seen before.
