El Valle is located within the crater (600 m above sea level) of the second largest inhabited dormant volcano in the world. On the morning of December 26, 2009, we traveled from our lodge in El Valle to bird the area around Cerro Gaital, a 1,000 m high mountain. Around lunchtime we were still birding in the Bosque Nuboso rainforest. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with partly cloudy skies and intermittent rain. Brad photographed this male Green-crowned Brilliant Hummingbird as it perched in a nearby tree. The male of this species has a white post-ocular spot, a violet colored throat, and a deeply forked tail.
