We left Canopy Lodge after an early breakfast on December 25, 2009, to head for the dry Pacific lowland around the small community of El Chiru. We saw this male Red-breasted Blackbird perched on a stump as we hiked along a dirt road in the area. With its bright red breast and throat and black head and back, this species is fairly easy to identify. It is a common species on savannas and grassy fields in the lowlands of the Pacific slope. Temperatures were in the low 80's (and climbing) on this partly cloudy morning.
