During the morning of December 24, 2009, we birded an area known as La Mesa. We were on a country road that led from El Valle through an area of farms and forest to a flat area located on the back side of three tall peaks. We were birding at 2,800 feet and below the crest of the Continental Divide. What this amounted to was lots of clouds passing over from the Caribbean side and fairly dark conditions. This made birding a challenge. The male Red-crowned Ant-Tanager is shown feeding on some flowers. Temperatures were in the upper 70's on this partly cloudy morning.
