After a full morning of birding on December 28, 2009, we drove back up Semaphore Hill, the one mile road connecting the main highway with Canopy Tower. Temperatures were in the mid- to high 80's on this partly sunny, humid afternoon. Tino, our guide from the Canopy Tower, saw this Slaty-tailed Trogon sitting motionless in a tree near the road. A portion of this female's upper mandible is black while the rest of the bill is orange-red. The underside of the bird's tail is dark gray, and the belly is red.
