After breakfast on December 28, 2009, we birded Semaphore Hill, the one mile road connecting Canopy Tower with the main highway. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this partly cloudy, humid morning. This is a close up shot of a male Slaty Antshrike. The photograph shows the male's thick, hooked bill and its slaty gray color. The wings are spotted and edged with white. The bird's black crown is not visible. Bold and inquisitive, this species is easier to observe than most antshrike species in Panama (lucky for us because it is a beautiful bird).
