El Valle is located within the crater (600 m above sea level) of the second largest inhabited dormant volcano in the world. On the morning of December 26, 2009, we traveled from our lodge in El Valle to bird the area around Cerro Gaital, a 1,000 m high mountain. Later in the morning we birded in Bosque Nuboso rainforest along the Sendero Trail. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with partly cloudy skies and intermittent rain. This is a photograph of a male Tawny-capped Euphonia with its tawny crest and yellow front. Note the undertail markings.
